Maintenance tips that will help your car last longer-

The older the car, the more help it needs to perform better. Car Surgeons give you tips that you can do at your end to maintain or even improve your car's performance.

Following a regular maintenance routine will help extend the life of your car as well as keep the performance at its peak. It will also save you a lot of money. Here are some basic tips that you can do to keep your cars upbeat.

1.Drive with care.

During start up if you accelerate your engine too quickly it adds to the wear of your car engine. Accelerate gently when you begin your drive every time. Be considerate to your car and you will see great rewards with longer service life.

2.Consider Car Cleaning:

A clean car is not only a pleasure to the eye but also does wonders to the car. By washing your car you keep it clean, shiny and most important of all, free from corrosion. And when you do the exteriors, do the interiors as well. Dirt particles are abrasive while spilled liquids of any sort can be corrosive. This in turn welcomes rodents and other pests. Vacuum your car interior thoroughly and wipe the lenses on the dashboard with a soft damp cloth. Sun dry your mats every time you clean them.

3.Park in shade

UV Rays are not only harmful to humans but also to your cars. Exposure to these rays can damage your interiors and your paint job. And so try parking your cars in shade. If shaded area is not available then use a car shade to minimize the sun’s impact on your interiors and protect your car’s paint job.

4.Engine oil and filter to be changed regularly.

Oil changes should ideally be at regular intervals prescribed by the manufacturer. Scheduled oil changes flush abrasive dirt and metal particles out of the engine, thus prolonging its life. Change of the oil filters should also be done while changing the oil as old filters contain build up of oil and dirt particles that will otherwise remain and mix with the new, clean oil.

5.Tired Tyres.

Tyre pressure must be inflated to the level recommended in your user manual and must be checked at regular intervals of time. Have your wheel alignments checked every 50,000 kms as improper alignment shortens the life of your tyres as well as causes steering problems. If your car pulls over to one side while driving or if your steering is stiffer than usual then it’s to be taken for granted that your wheels need realignment.

6.Engine Empathy

Car owners must be very sensitive to their car engines. It must be washed at least every year. A clean engine runs better and cooler than a dirty engine. A clean engine also enables you to easily spot leaks and service its components. Be it yourself or through professional steam cleaners, make sure to protect sensitive engine components including the air intake, distributor and electrical parts with plastic bags before getting started. Use grease- cutting detergent and a bristle brush to scrub the engine and once done, rinse thoroughly.

7.Spark Plug Cleanliness

Spark plugs play a major role in starting your vehicle. Without them your vehicle wouldn’t start, so maintaining them is very important. Many manufactures recommend changing spark plugs every 50,000 km. This ensures good fuel mileage and high engine performance.

8.Your Car Battery’s life span

Even though the manufacturers of your car battery might claim that it is maintenance free, you still have to check your car battery to extend its working life. It’s not too much to ask for. You can start by keeping the battery terminals clean. Clean it with a damp cotton cloth and you could also use some detergent if needed.

9.Insure your car

"The streets are filed with Idiots" - and so the ad goes. No matter how careful you are, mishaps are bound to happen. And so, it's important to have your car insured.
